Kebanyakan orang khawatir persendian mereka lama-lama rusak akibat olahraga tersebut. Padahal, menurut penelitian di Stanford University yang mengamati sejumlah pelari selama 21 tahun, kondisi lutut para pelari tak lebih buruk daripada yang bukan pelari.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Persendian pelari yang rata-rata berlari sejauh 200 km dalam setahun juga sama saja kondisinya dengan yang berlari 2.000 km per tahun. Bahkan, kabar baiknya, ketidakmampuan fisik akibat penuaan pada kedua kelompok pelari itu justru timbul 16 tahun lebih lambat jika dibandingkan dengan yang bukan pelari. Meski begitu, kalau Anda berlari dengan kecepatan kurang dari sembilan kilometer per jam, lebih baik berjalan saja, kata pelatih lari Mike Antoniades. Berjalan dengan kecepatan enam kilometer per jam atau lebih, secara biomekanis lebih efisien dibandingkan berlari perlahan karena memperkecil efek benturan pada pinggul, lutut dan sendi pergelangan kaki.
